The Customer Insight System 2.0 (CIS 2.0) was initially conceived as a CRM tool to enable the growth of The Medicines Company’s sales team. As a custom solution the CIS had the potential to enable the sales force, but had low adoption and usage, and needed to be re-designed to meet the needs of its users and achieve its potential.
We utilized a user-experience design approach that included User Research with Surveys and interviews, personal development, sketches and storyboards. The project than proceeded through mockups, tests, validations and feature prioritization. We partnered with an offshore engineering team in Agile cycles to develop and launch the project.
The resulting redesigned product was an easy-to-use application that enabled the sales team to make meaningful connections with medical professionals, track competitors, and measure their own sales as well as their team members', and helped align the customer engagement with the Company’s strategic vision. The application was so successful that it was acquired along with the strategic acquisition of accompanying pharmaceutical product lines.

In the world of online products (which all companies need today in order to compete) where technologies rapidly develop and become commoditized - your two key assets are your overall product strategy, and your product design.
What is strategy? Strategy is the unique plan you have for addressing your market needs, in light of the existing market (if there is one), your competition, the technology landscape, and your resources, such as your team, your funding, your technology assets and other competitive advantages.
You may have a great idea, powerful technology, an opportunity that seems to have no competition (ideally of course, all of these factors and more) but you could embark on the wrong strategy and still end up without a working business. There are many examples in Internet history. For example, why did Yahoo! lose out to Google, despite being the #1 internet portal at the time, with top industry talent, funding and technology? The Google team had a unique strategy - a strategy that focused first on capturing the market for Search, and then expanding into other core services. Their strategy even resulted in Yahoo paying Google to license Google Search technology, giving Google both revenue and market share while Yahoo focused on other things that seemed like less-risky, revenue-generating winners at the time.
On the other side of the coin, take LinkedIn, the social network that developed a winning strategy in multiple areas by correctly assessing the market landscape, where technology is moving, and that seemed high risk at the time, and obvious in retrospect. LinkedIn overall focused on acquiring consumers and growing as a new kind of social network, while putting in place a diverse set of revenue streams that grew stronger as the size of the network grew.
In addition to the core driver of the Recruiter and Jobs businesses, LinkedIn developed a Premium Subscriptions business, and an advertising business. Even the ads business had a specific strategy that foresaw longer-term trends and was positioned to capture revenue as the internet shifted to mobile advertising. By developing social ads to supplement the traditional banner advertising business, and Company Pages as free marketing vehicles for companies, LinkedIn gave companies a new way to engage their job prospects and potential customers, and easy ways to extend that reach via paid advertisements. These paid advertisements were not only engaging and effective, but they could be inserted into the LinkedIn content feed, a core part of the mobile experience.
Developing this strategy may not have seemed intuitive at the time, as the banner ad business was strong and effective, but it was critical to that business line’s long-term success. Key to developing this strategy was understanding the current market, the company’s key advantages, the resources at hand, and where the technology and overall marketplace for online advertising was headed in the long-term. The result was a plan that took all of these factors into consideration and - with the participation of countless talented people across multiple teams and many years, a business bringing in billions of dollars in revenue.
